13.07.2018. Kryptogen Rundfunk has recorded a special soundtrack for “Kawarga-Skete” – a unique object built by Dmitry Kawarga in an extremely remote village in the North-East of Leningrad region. A 21-meter tower with a contemplation room on top, built on the remains of an abandoned wood-cutting factory.
“This hybrid structure combines the tradition of monastic seclusion with the way of life of a man who exercises art as spiritual practice. To anyone climbing inside the tower, the ascent is symbolic. Working one’s way through the monstrous structure of a factory… rising up through a column of industrial scrap and waste… then standing aloft in the cupola space between sky and earth – free of the intrusions of materialism. Sounds from the composer Kryptogen Rundfunk reign from within this biomorphic cell – focusing the journeyman on the scattered fragments of the self – washing him down with nature’s own elements.”
A one-hour long infinitely looped soundtrack of abstract electronics & field recordings was prepared for the contemplation room, and another 30-min. long sound collage of industrial atmospheres was designed for the hall of the former sawmill.
